Preparing Fiji’s Future Leaders: Australia Awards Scholars Step Into Their Journey

Published on February 16, 2026

Nov 2025– 28 Fiji recipients of the Australia Awards Scholarship gathered in Suva for a two‑day pre‑departure briefing, marking the beginning of their academic journey to Australia for study in 2026. The program brought together scholars, alumni, DFAT representatives and families, creating a supportive environment to prepare awardees academically, personally and socially for life abroad.

DFAT Economic and Development Counsellor Andrew Shepherd opened the event by congratulating the scholars, noting that they represent the top five per cent of nearly 1,000 annual applicants in Fiji. His message reinforced both the prestige of the award and the significance of their commitment to Fiji’s development.

Building Strong Foundations

Day one focused on equipping scholars with clarity and confidence. Sessions unpacked scholarship obligations and the Australia Awards Policy Handbook, ensuring awardees understood expectations and available support. Alumni including Jiupili Simmons shared practical advice for navigating the Australian academic environment, encouraging scholars to take advantage of enrichment opportunities. Candid reflections from alumnus Ratu Nabotuiloma Sunaki highlighted the importance of staying grounded in purpose to overcome challenges and grow personally.

Preparing for Life in Australia

Day two broadened the lens to life beyond study, with sessions on wellbeing, inclusion, gender equality, disability, reintegration planning, cybersecurity, child protection and PSEAH. These discussions aimed to build awareness, promote safeguards and support awardees to navigate their new environment with confidence.

A new dedicated session for family members offered reassurance and practical guidance, acknowledging the essential role families play before and during the scholars’ time abroad. Scholars also engaged in a First Nations awareness session, fostering understanding of Australia’s Indigenous histories and cultures.

Throughout the program, Australia Awards alumni from across Australia co‑facilitated discussions, demonstrating the strength and value of the alumni network.

Looking Ahead

Comprised of 12 women and 16 men, the 2026 cohort includes 22 postgraduate and six undergraduate scholars, with most set to begin studies in semester one. Shepherd reminded awardees that the scholarship is a holistic experience prioritising leadership and development impact. He encouraged scholars to return with skills and connections that would benefit Fiji and strengthen the Fiji–Australia Vuvale partnership.

The briefing concluded with a networking reception hosted by Australian High Commissioner Peter Roberts, who spoke highly about the impact of returning alumni in maintaining Australian connections, keeping critical sectors at home strong and resilient, and mentoring others by sharing their experiences.  At the reception, scholars connected with alumni, advisors and key stakeholders — reinforcing the community that sits at the heart of the Australia Awards program.
